AMD Posts EPYC Benchmarks, Teases Vega Frontier Edition
AMD is well on its way to snatching more share in the mainstream desktop PC market, and the company also has plans for the HEDT and value ends of the totem pole with its ThreadRipper and Ryzen 3 processors on the horizon. That leaves the margin-rich data center as AMD’s final target. Intel and Nvidia are both titans in the data center, with Intel holding 95%+ of the global server CPU sockets and Nvidia holding the lion’s share of the burgeoning AI segment with its lineup of GPUs. AMD, however, is the only company that has both GPUs and CPUs under the same roof, which could lend it a tactical advantage against its competitors…

Wolf in sheep’s clothing: a SophosLabs investigation into delivering malware via VBA
The document threat landscape has in recent years been dominated by Microsoft Word and Excel spreadsheet malware. This is thanks, in no small part, to the drastic resurgence of Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) being used as a delivery method for malicious payloads. It’s a topic we’ve delved into before, most notably in this article from senior Sophos technologist Paul Ducklin. As he did back then, researcher Graham Chantry recently dug into the data and mechanics of the trend as seen from the SophosLabs’ perspective for an updated picture of the problem. What follows are his updated findings for the last six months…

AMD CPU Updates: 16 Core ThreadRipper w/64 PCIe Lanes This Summer, Epyc Launching June 20th
Wrapping up just a bit ago was AMD’s annual Computex press conference. AMD brings their A-game to Computex, and for a good reason: as a PC focused show, it gives them great exposure, but it also allows them to promote their OEM relationships, the latter of which are crucial to AMD’s survival as the CPU underdog. Computex in turn isn’t a venue for deep technical announcements, but it’s a good place to get clarity on AMD’s CPU roadmap…

‘Halos’ on Mars Suggest Conditions for Life Lasted Longer Than Thought
Pale zones called “halos” border bedrock fractures visible in this 2015 image from NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover. Measurements overlaid on the image offer a sense of scale for the size of these fractures. The rover team determined that the halos are rich in silica, a clue to the duration of wet environmental conditions long ago. The location is on the lower slope of Mars’ Mount Sharp…

SpaceX set to join rare company by re-flying an orbital spacecraft
Only two spacecraft, besides the space shuttle, have flown into orbit more than once. SpaceX took a big step toward a fully reusable launch system earlier this year by re-flying a used Falcon 9 booster, and it is making progress toward eventually recovering the rocket’s upper stage and payload fairing. Now, the company is set to try to recover another key component of its space hardware—a Dragon cargo spacecraft. The launch window for the supply mission opens on Thursday, June 1, at 5:55pm ET (10:55pm BST)…

Vanishing star hints at direct collapse to black hole

Vanishing star hints at direct collapse to black hole
A star that vanished with a whimper in 2015 hints at a theoretical stellar death. The rules for a stellar death seem pretty simple. If the star isn’t that massive, it burns out into a carbon-rich remnant called a white dwarf. If it’s big enough, the star ends in a bang, exploding in a supernova that can leave behind a neutron star or a black hole. But a number of simulations have suggested that there’s another option: big stars that go out not with a bang but a whimper…

First the cloud, now AI takes on the scientific method
Back when I was doing research, one of my advisors once joked that, if you wait long enough, you can produce an old result using new methods, manage to get it published, and everyone will be impressed. I think his time limit was 15 years. Apparently, when it comes to big ideas about science (rather than scientific results), the schedule’s a bit accelerated…
