Can SpaceX afford its new Mars rocket — and will there be a market for it?
On Friday, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk laid out his vision for SpaceX’s future: the company is going all-in on a next-generation vehicle called the BFR, or Big Fucking Rocket. This rocket, which will be capable of going to the Moon and Mars, will eventually become SpaceX’s primary vehicle for launching satellites and traveling to the International Space Station, too…

Elon Musk Should Remember The Concorde
By now, you may have heard that Elon Musk has come up with yet another wondrous glimpse into the very near (?) future that he will build for us. New Horizons’ discoveries keep coming
New ScienceCast video presents recent results from New Horizons spacecraft data – from landslides on Charon to weather, possibly snow, on Pluto. It also previews New Horizons’ next target. New Horizons, which passed Pluto in 2015, is on its way to new discoveries deep in the Kuiper Belt – a region inhabited by ancient remnants from the dawn of the solar system. It’ll encounter its next target, a cold, classic Kuiper Belt object called MU69, in late 2018. In the meantime, mission scientists are still pouring over the data from New Horizons’ Pluto encounter, and wow! The discoveries they’re still making show Pluto – dwarf planet though it may now be – as one of the most fascinating worlds in our solar system…

Apple is tired of relying on Intel or Qualcomm for anything
Apple already does the most end-to-end work of any company building smartphones. It has complete control over the physical design, codes all the software, and designs the CPU at the heart of every phone. But it still relies heavily on outside companies to produce many of the critical components for its phones and laptops. That leads to differences in the quality of chips between different iPhones, and can also be a strategic problem when, say, one of your suppliers of baseband modems decides to sue you…

IBM Brings Analytics To The Data For Faster Processing
Data analytics is a rapidly evolving field, and IBM and other vendors over the past several years have built numerous tools to address segments of it. But now Big Blue is shifting its focus to give data scientists and developers the technologies they need more easily and quickly analyze the data and derive insights that they can apply to their businesses strategies. “We have [created] a ton of different products that solve parts of the problem,” Rob Thomas, general manager of IBM Analytics, tells The Next Platform. “We’re moving toward a strategy of developing platforms for analytics. This trend of products to platforms is a dominant one in how we’re building out what we’re doing here for analytics.”…

Intel Coffee Lake Vs. Kaby Lake: A Side-By-Side Comparison
Intel is poised to release its 8th Gen Coffee Lake processors on October 5, which means it’s just about time to start asking if you should get yourself a cuppa the company’s latest CPUs or if you should stick with Kaby Lake. Or if you’re upgrading from a previous generation, whether the extra costs of Coffee Lake (and there are extra costs) make it a better choice than Kaby Lake. Let’s do a little comparison shopping. Coffee Lake and Kaby Lake are similar in many ways. They rely on the same microarchitecture, with Coffee Lake being effectively (ahem) caffeinated with a slightly refined manufacturing process (14nm++) over Kaby Lake (14nm+), as well as more cores and threads across the board, a different allocation of cache resources, and a few new overclocking knobs and levers…

Anaconda Teams With Microsoft In Machine Learning Push
Microsoft is embedding Anaconda’s Python distribution into its Azure Machine Learning products, the latest move by the software vendor to expand its capabilities in the fast-growing artificial intelligence space and an example of Anaconda extending its reach beyond high performance computing and into AI. The two companies announced the partnership this week at the Strata Data Conference in New York City, with the news dovetailing with other announcements around AI that Microsoft officials made this week at its own Ignite 2017 show. The vendors said they will offer Anaconda for Microsoft, which they described as a subset of the Anaconda Python distribution that is now available on Windows as well as MacOS and Linux. There will be a range of options within the Anaconda for Microsoft offering, they said…

Lenovo’s System x3500 M5 Tower Rocks the Office
While the cloud seems to get all the attention these days, a need still exists for departmental servers. The Lenovo System x3500 M5 more than fits the bill for departmental and SOHO requirements. In fact, you could run a lot more than a small office on a fully-loaded System x3500 M5. It’s even quiet enough to stash in a corner somewhere or back in the store room. Versatility is the name of the game when it comes to optional equipment. Lenovo offers a number of stock systems, plus they give you the ability to customize to meet your specific needs. Hardware options abound from CPU to memory and networking to storage…

Apple Quietly Patches macOS Security Bypass Vulnerability
Apple appears to have silently patched a vulnerability in macOS that would have allowed attackers to bypass the operating system’s built-in file quarantine system and execute malicious JavaScript code. The issue was discovered by Italian security researcher Filippo Cavallarin, of security firm Segment, who used Beyond Security’s SSD (SecuriTeam Secure Disclosure) program to report the flaw to Apple in a secure and responsible manner…

Robots Roll Towards China – VC investments take big steps up
Robots are on the rise with “massive growth” in venture investments and steeper revenue growth projected beyond 2020. Experts foresee long-term markets rise and prices decline as China’s factories start making and consuming more automated systems. Industrial robots will see “strong growth after 2020, due to their proliferation in Asia and the availability of more low-cost, high-quality systems,” said Dan Kara, research director for robotics at market watcher ABI Research, forecasting China will overtake the U.S. as the largest market in a few years…

An Ex-Google Engineer Is Founding a Religion to Worship AI. He’s Decades Too Late.
The headlines on this one could almost write themselves. Anthony Levandowski, the disgraced former Google engineer whose copying of trade secrets led Waymo (Alphabet’s self-driving car company) to file a lawsuit against Uber for $1.86 billion, founded an organization called “Way of the Future” back in 2015. Its purpose, according to state filings, was to “develop and promote the realization of a Godhead based on Artificial Intelligence.”…

Disagraced one-time Google engineer Anthony Levandowski wants to found a religion based on the veneration of artificial intelligence. If he’d paused to consider the concept, he might have realized he’s decades late to the party.

Apple Is Quietly Designing and Building Its Own Silicon Empire
Ever since Apple bought PA Semi, it’s been clear the company had aspirations of semiconductor design. Its CPU architectures have differed from other vendors by emphasizing raw single-thread performance, and it’s been debuting co-design chips like motion and audio co-processors for the last several years. It’s also purchased part of Toshiba’s flash memory business, thereby gaining a NAND source for itself without having to directly shoulder all of the burden of building a fab and NAND business. And Apple claims its most recent chip, the A11 Bionic, includes a neural engine for AI workloads. The company hasn’t revealed how this chip works yet, so we don’t know if it’s a more conventional, repurposed piece of silicon specifically dedicated to AI tasks, or if Apple is using part of its custom GPU to handle these workloads…

Apple Is Quietly Designing and Building Its Own Silicon Empire – ExtremeTech

Apple is quietly building a semiconductor empire for itself that could, in the long-term, challenge Qualcomm and Intel on modems, and even Intel on CPUs. That last bit won’t happen anytime soon, but it’s not impossible.

AMD EPYC 7401P Linux Benchmarks and Review – Something Special
Today we have something that we have been waiting to share for some time, a special review of the 24-core AMD EPYC 7401P in single socket configuration. The AMD EPYC 7401P offers a unique value that is largely unprecedented in the server CPU space: pricing under $45 per core and $23 per thread on higher core count parts. Beyond that, the CPU delivers 24 cores and 48 threads to a single socket at a price point under $1100, or about what Intel will sell you a 12 core Skylake-SP part for…
