A seismic recording device on Mayotte was the first to detect the hum, though not the first one people noticed. There was a hum that nobody could hear. It was a seismic event, one that originated off the coast of Mayotte on Nov. 11, a tiny island in the waters between Madagascar and Mozambique. From there, it circled the entire world, though it was unusual enough (un-earthquake-ish enough) that almost no one noticed, as Maya Wei-Haas reported for National Geographic. A year ago I reviewed Intel’s monstrous Core i9-7980XE, which was the most powerful desktop CPU to date and offered nearly twice the number of cores as the previous flagship, the Core i7-6950X. It was a surprise entry for Intel, as was the rest of its high-end desktop range, which aimed to crush AMD’s Threadripper. In terms of performance, it succeeded, bettering the Threadripper 1950X at every turn. However, this performance came at a high price and 2018 has seen AMD’s 2nd generation Threadrippers offer twice as many cores as well as boosting clock speeds and performance. The Register can reveal that Dell EMC is looking to add storage-class memory (SCM) and NVMe drives and fabric across its storage portfolio and that HPE’s Nimble arrays will get SCM support in 2019. At a briefing this week, Dell EMC storage product marketing manager Bob Fine told us SCM was already an incoming technology on PowerMAX, as was NVMe (both drives and fabric). Astrophysicists believe that our universe, which is about 13.7 billion years old, began forming the first stars when it was a few hundred million years old. Since then, the universe has become a star-making tour de force. There are now about two trillion galaxies and a trillion-trillion stars.
