BeagleBone AI Raspberry Pi-Style Dev Board Packs Potent Computer Vision Engine

BeagleBone AI Raspberry Pi-Style Dev Board Packs Potent Computer Vision Engine
The Raspberry Pi Foundation may have popularized the single-board PC concept, but it is by no means the only entry in the field. There have been many challengers to the Raspberry Pi throne, including most recently the Orange Pi 3. Today we have a new offering called the BeagleBone AI. You can think of the BeagleBone AI as a faster and much more feature-packed version of the BeagleBone Black (which can be had for around $50). The BeagleBone AI is compatible – mechanically, header support – with the BeagleBone Black, but incorporates a beefier Texas Instruments AM5729 SoC (ARM Cortex-A15 based). With that comes 1GB of RAM, 16GB of eMMC flash, Wi-Fi, GbE, a USB-A host and USB-C for power…

Chandra Detects Ultra-Energetic Particles from NGC 3079’s ‘Fermi Bubbles’
NGC 3079, an edge-on spiral galaxy located about 67 million light-years from Earth, contains two ‘superbubbles.’ New observations from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory show that a cosmic particle accelerator in this galaxy is producing ultra-energetic particles in the rims of the superbubbles. These particles can be much more energetic than those created by the Large Hadron Collider at CERN…

Pluto’s Battle Scars Reveal a Wild West at Solar System’s Far Reaches
Pluto may have been downgraded to a dwarf planet, but its mysteries still loom large. When NASA’s New Horizons reconnaissance probe flew past Pluto and its moon Charon in 2015, the resulting footage revealed a novel world of icy peaks, glacial planes and frozen volcanoes not seen anywhere else in the solar system…

TensorFlow 1.13.1 surges forward with Python 3.7 support and enhanced core
With the TensorFlow Dev Summit just a week away, the team behind the popular library for numerical computation has released TensorFlow 1.13.1 bringing its users Python 3.7 support and a slightly reworked project structure. The latter is due to the goal of dissolving contrib in time for the next major release. For the 1.13.1 release this meant moving TensorFlow Lite, which is meant for mobile and embedded devices, as well as the Nvidia Collective Communication Library (NCCL), to the core library. TensorFlow Lite modules can therefore be found under tf.lite now…

Here’s why the US is terrified of one Chinese company controlling the world’s 5G networks [ Horror; Horror: A dying empire tells us what to do ! ]
US officials stepped up their rhetoric against Huawei, just as the Chinese firm made a big pitch about its 5G business at the mobile industry’s flagship gathering. At the Mobile World Congress, the top US cyber official, Robert Strayer, asked European governments to consider the “threat” posed by using Huawei’s 5G equipment in their mobile networks. Huawei shot back, and said the US also had surveillance systems. Security experts told Business Insider that the US was afraid of yielding control of telecoms infrastructure to Chinese firms that might have to kowtow to laws from an undemocratic regime. [ Ahaha ! As if US were democratic !!! Remember Snowden ]…

Large Hadron Collider pushing computing to the limits
At the end of 2018, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) completed its second multi-year run (“Run 2”) that saw the machine reach a proton–proton collision energy of 13 TeV, the highest ever reached by a particle accelerator. During this run, from 2015 to 2018, LHC experiments produced unprecedented volumes of data with the machine’s performance exceeding all expectations…

Spider silk could be used as robotic muscle

Spider silk could be used as robotic muscle
_Spider silk, already known as one of the strongest materials for its weight, turns out to have another unusual property that might lead to new kinds of artificial muscles or robotic actuators, researchers have found. The resilient fibers, the team discovered, respond very strongly to changes in humidity. Above a certain level of relative humidity in the air, they suddenly contract and twist, exerting enough force to potentially be competitive with other materials being explored as actuators—devices that move to perform some activity such as controlling a valve.
