Spider silk could be used as robotic muscle

Spider silk could be used as robotic muscle
_Spider silk, already known as one of the strongest materials for its weight, turns out to have another unusual property that might lead to new kinds of artificial muscles or robotic actuators, researchers have found. The resilient fibers, the team discovered, respond very strongly to changes in humidity. Above a certain level of relative humidity in the air, they suddenly contract and twist, exerting enough force to potentially be competitive with other materials being explored as actuators—devices that move to perform some activity such as controlling a valve.

Bitbucket makes continuous delivery feature Pipes broadly available

Bitbucket makes continuous delivery feature Pipes broadly available
DevOps can be a bear sometimes. A decent portion of the work involves setting up continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) pipelines, which help automate app building, testing, and deployment — essentially acting as bridges between operations and development teams. That might sound simple enough, but connecting tools and writing integrations for countless services is an error-prone, research-intensive process that involves lots of debugging and maintenance…

Department of Energy moves forward with controversial test reactor

Department of Energy moves forward with controversial test reactor
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced today that it will go forward with plans to build a controversial new nuclear reactor that some critics have called a boondoggle. If all goes as planned, the Versatile Test Reactor (VTR) will be built at DOE’s Idaho National Laboratory (INL) near Idaho Falls and will generate copious high-energy neutrons to test new material and technologies for nuclear reactors. That would fill a key gap in the United States’s nuclear capabilities, proponents say. However, some critics have argued that the project is just an excuse to build a reactor of the general type that can generate more fuel than it consumes by “breeding” plutonium…
