AMD Market Share Gains Accelerate in Desktop PCs, Servers and Notebooks
During the company’s recent earnings call, AMD CEO Lisa Su alluded to market share gains in the fourth quarter of 2018 but didn’t provide specific figures. Today AMD shared numbers from third-party industry analyst firm Mercury Research that outline those gains. AMD gained share in desktop PC processors, notebooks, and servers, highlighting that its Zen-based processors continue to pressure Intel on all fronts, but more importantly, AMD’s rate of growth is also accelerating. These improvements come as the company is on the cusp of releasing 7nm processors for the desktop PC and server markets, marking its first process node lead over Intel…

Softbank Sells Entire $3.6 Billion Nvidia Investment
Nvidia suffered a blow today as SoftBank’s Vision Fund announced that it sold the entirety of its $3.63 billion investment in the chip-maker. SoftBank was one of Nvidia’s largest investors, but it dumped its share on January 10 the investment group said in its Q3 earnings for its fiscal year 2019. Nuance’s AI uses real interactions to make chat bots smarter – Project Pathfinder draws on human conversation, not service scripts.
Many high profile brands and companies have a customer service chat bot function on their website. Indeed, some research suggests that by 2020 conversational AI will be the main go-to for customer support in large organizations. But as the current technology stands, it’s only as effective as the manual programming that’s gone into its creation, and relies on the customer asking the right questions or including the right keywords to send the bot down the right branch of script. Today, though, Nuance Communication has announced a new technology that aims to make the conversational intelligence of chat bots a whole lot smarter…

Hayabusa 2 will finally start mining an asteroid on February 22nd
After blasting off toward a diamond-shaped asteroid in 2014, Japan’s Hayabusa 2 probe reached its target more than three years later. It then began mapping the rock known as Ryugu (which means “Dragon Palace” in Japanese) before sending two of its rovers down to its surface last September, followed by its MASCOT robot in October. The fruits of its labors arrived thereafter in the form of some epic images of the asteroid, including a detailed close-up of its surface. But it’s not done yet. Next up, the probe itself will land on the surface at 8AM local time on February 22nd in order to begin collecting samples, Japan’s space agency JAXA announced on Wednesday…

Severe RCE Flaw Disclosed in Popular LibreOffice and OpenOffice Software
It’s 2019, and just opening an innocent looking office document file on your system can still allow hackers to compromise your computer. No, I’m not talking about yet another vulnerability in Microsoft Office, but in two other most popular alternatives—LibreOffice and Apache OpenOffice—free, open source office software used by millions of Windows, MacOS and Linux users…

Home DNA kit company says it’s working with the FBI
FamilyTreeDNA – one of the larger makers of at-home genealogy test kits – has disclosed that it’s quietly been giving the FBI access to its database of 1 million DNA profiles to help solve violent crime. Investigators’ use of public genealogy databases is nothing new: law enforcement agencies have been using them for years. But the power of online genealogy databases to help track down and identify people became clear in April 2018, when police arrested Joseph James DeAngelo on suspicion of being the Golden State Killer: the man allegedly responsible for more than 50 rapes, 12 murders and more than 120 burglaries across the state of California during the 70s and 80s…

The Unsung Heroes of Modern Software Development
Open source computing is hugely important to software development. It is the model that everyone benefits from. The open source foundations that support this development play a crucial role. However, their work often goes unnoticed. I had no idea until I research this article that so many projects benefited from these foundations. Let’s see the who’s behind many of the tools software developers and data scientists use every day…
