Google details cloud LDAP service including pricing
Earlier in October, Google announced Cloud Identity for partners and customers. One of the features of Cloud Identity I was most excited about was the cloud LDAP feature that is part of this service. LDAP is an open source directory protocol that a lot of enterprise services support. Google is heavily investing in its cloud identity service. They expect by 2021, more than 50% of all enterprises will adopt an “all in cloud strategy.”…

There’s a Strange Cloud on Mars Right Now, and It’s Just Hanging Around
For more than a month now, a European orbiter circling Mars has been watching a long, plume-like cloud on the Red Planet. The cloud has remained in place over a mountain called Arsia Mons near the Martian equator since Sept. 13, according to a statement released by the European Space Agency (ESA). But that location is just a coincidence, the agency adds. No volcanic process is producing the cloud — the volcano hasn’t been active in about 50 million years, scientists believe…

‘It’s Going to Be Historic’: New Horizons Team Prepares for Epic Flyby of Ultima Thule
In less than 10 weeks, NASA’s New Horizons mission will explore the most distant target ever visited by a spacecraft. In the early-morning hours of Jan. 1, 2019, New Horizons will ring in the New Year by flying past the Kuiper Belt object (KBO) officially called 2014 MU69 but nicknamed Ultima Thule, a city-size rock regarded as a frozen relic from the birth of the solar system…

More solar panels mean more waste and there’s no easy solution – It’s going to be a major problem by 2050
Solar panels might be the energy source of the future, but they also create a problem without an easy solution: what do we do with millions of panels when they stop working?…

Facebook Fined £500,000 for Cambridge Analytica Data Scandal [ It’s not a fine it’s a REWARD ! ]
Facebook has finally been slapped with its first fine of £500,000 for allowing political consultancy firm Cambridge Analytica to improperly gather and misuse data of 87 million users. The fine has been imposed by the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) and was calculated using the UK’s old Data Protection Act 1998 which can levy a maximum penalty of £500,000 — ironically that’s equals to the amount Facebook earns every 18 minutes…

Could TLS session resumption be another ‘super cookie’?
The problem with trying to stop advertisers from tracking web users is that the complex engineering of the web offers so many ways for them to do this. Well-known techniques include using cookies and browser fingerprinting, which is why Firefox and Apple’s Safari have introduced new controls designed to blunt them in recent weeks…

Could TLS session resumption be another ‘super cookie’?

Researchers think they’ve spotted a tracking technique that nobody has been paying attention to – TLS session resumption.

Firefox 63 gets tough with trackers
Mozilla’s ambition to turn Firefox into the number one privacy browser was never going to be easy to pull off. Too few, or ineffective, controls and privacy becomes a benefit in name only. Too many blunt controls and there is a danger of making websites difficult to use in ways that put people off the whole idea…

Mozilla’s Enhanced Tracking Protection is going mainstream.

Micro-drones with winches can open doors and lift 40 times their own weight
Micro-drones are nifty little things: small, fast, and agile. But they’re not the strongest machines around, and are barely capable of exerting more force than a small mouse head-butting your ankle. Until now. Scientists from Stanford University and EPFL in Switzerland have created a micro-drone with a built-in winch that’s capable of lifting up to 40 times its own weight and performing simple mechanical tasks like opening a door…

Xiaomi announces Mi Mix 3 with sliding cameras and no notch
Xiaomi has announced the Mi Mix 3, the latest entry in its series of full-screen flagship phones. It’s yet another high-end Chinese device with a huge screen-to-body ratio achieved by hiding the front-facing cameras on a sliding mechanism — no notch required. Unlike the Vivo Nex or Oppo Find X, however, the slider isn’t powered by motors. CEO Lei Jun compares the design to older sliding phones and suggests that it’ll be relaxing just to play with…

It Looks Like AMD’s Linux Developers Have Begun Work On Zen 2 / EPYC 2 “Rome” Support
Ahead of the Zen 2 processors expected in 2019, it appears AMD developers have begun working on their Linux kernel support patches for these next-generation CPUs. In particular, it appears the flow of Linux kernel code for supporting EPYC 2 “Rome” processors has begun. Sent into the mainline Linux kernel this morning were the EDAC updates for Linux 4.20~5.0. EDAC in this context is for Error Detection And Correction – error reporting functionality mostly useful for server/workstation platforms. Usually the EDAC changes aren’t worth writing about on Phoronix, but I did notice one of the changes standing out: “Add Family 17h, models 10h-2fh support.”…

The creator of Jenkins has gone native in a cloudy DevOps world
Jenkins, er, DevOps World kicked off in Nice this week as CloudBees took to the stage in front of 800 fans of the pipeline to show off some of the toys available to lucky devs. Kohsuke Kawaguchi, creator of the Jenkins automation server and chief technology officer of CloudBees, launched into a run-through of what he described as the “five superpowers” CloudBees is bestowing on developers (for a fee), after confessing to the audience: “I’ve been at this more than a decade.”…

Simulate Typing with This C Program
I recently created a video demonstration of how to do some work at the command line, but as I tried to record my video, I kept running into problems. I’m just not the kind of person who can type commands at a keyboard and talk about it at the same time. I quickly realized I needed a way to simulate typing, so I could create a “canned” demonstration that I could narrate in my video…

AMD Zen 2 could be a huge leap over Ryzen 2nd Generation CPUs
AMD’s rumored 7-nanometer architecture for processors – is still months away from its expected CES 2019 reveal, but we’re seeing a slow trickle of details come out. AMD Zen 2 will supposedly feature a 13% increase in instructions per clock (IPC), otherwise known as the instructions executed for each clock cycle. This is impressive because it’s a nearly five-times increase in IPC compared to the 3% increase we saw from the first Ryzen processors to Ryzen 2nd Generation – or from Zen to Zen+ architecture…
