Fujitsu Leaks Intel’s Upcoming 9th Generation Lineup

Fujitsu Leaks Intel's Upcoming 9th Generation Lineup
Fujitsu has posted a comparability matrix for its solutions that seemingly lists the entire lineup for Intel's new 9th-Generation processors. Intel's initial announcement of the 9th Generation lineup occurred in October 2018 in a limited fashion: The company only introduced three models spanning its Core i5, i7 and i9 lines, with the expectation that more would come in the future. Intel later announced the Core i5-9400 at CES 2019, but it'd make sense for Intel to continue expanding the lineup...

AMD EPYC Reportedly Is Chipping Away At Intel Xeon Server CPU Dominance
AMD has managed to reassert itself into the enthusiast discussion thanks to its modern generation Zen CPU and, to a lesser extent, Vega GPU architectures. Between Ryzen and Threadripper, there are compelling non-Intel options for power users. This also applies to the server side of the equation, and though Intel still dominates the landscape, AMD's EPYC processors are gaining ground...

One Step Closer to Deep Learning on Neuromorphic Hardware

One Step Closer to Deep Learning on Neuromorphic Hardware
A group of researchers at Sandia National Laboratories have developed a tool that can cross-train standard convolutional neural networks (CNN) to a spiking neural model that can be used on neuromorphic processors. The researchers claim that the conversion will enable deep learning applications to take advantage of the much better energy efficiency of neuromorphic hardware, which are designed to mimic the way the biological neurons work. The tool, known as Whetstone, works by adjusting artificial neuron behavior during the training phase to only activate when it reaches an appropriate threshold. As a result, neuron activation become a binary choice – either it spikes or it doesn’t. By doing so, Whetstone converts an artificial neural network into a spiking neural network. The tool does this by using an incremental “sharpening process” (hence Whetstone) through each network layer until the activation becomes discrete...

CERN lab on the hunt for dark matter
Europe's physics lab CERN on Tuesday said it was planning a new experiment to look for particles associated with dark matter which is believed to make up some 27 percent of the universe [ False premise, false conclusions: they are searching for the ghosts of Big-Bang, which never occurred ]. The European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN), which is home to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC)—a giant lab in a 27-kilometre (17-mile) tunnel straddling the French-Swiss border—said the new experiment was "designed to look for light and weakly interacting particles"...

Kepler Space Telescope’s first exoplanet candidate confirmed, ten years after launch

Kepler Space Telescope's first exoplanet candidate confirmed, ten years after launch
An international team of astronomers, led by University of Hawaiʻi graduate student Ashley Chontos, announced the confirmation of the first exoplanet candidate identified by NASA's Kepler Mission. The result was presented today at the fifth Kepler/K2 Science Conference held in Glendale, CA. Launched almost exactly 10 years ago, the Kepler Space Telescope has discovered thousands of exoplanets using the transit method - small dips in a star's brightness as planets cross in front of the star. Because other phenomena can mimic transits, Kepler data reveal planet candidates, but further analysis is required to confirm them as genuine planets...

VMware Unveils Service-Defined Firewall at RSA Conference

VMware Unveils Service-Defined Firewall at RSA Conference
VMware moved deeper in the security sector at the RSA Conference, unveiling an internal firewall it calls a Service-defined Firewall. The product combines the capabilities of VMware’s NSX virtualization platform, which provides network and application visibility, and its first security product App Defense, which protects workloads by monitoring them against their intended state. And it adds automated and adaptive firewall capabilities to the mix. It works with bare metal, virtual machine (VM), and container-based application environments, and will support hybrid cloud environments such as VMware Cloud on AWS (Amazon Web Services) and AWS Outposts in the future...
